Quilted Emptiness (Live)
Cotton fabric, polyester batting, dye, ink, and plastic clothespins
Variable size
Quilted Emptiness is a multimedia installation composed of a video performance and 29 round quilts, held by clothespins and hanging from the ceiling. The video depicts the artist in a recreation of a clubbing scene: alone in an empty space, dancing to loud music, drinking Jäegermeister and Red Bull, and all the while fabricating disco ball-like quilts at a sewing machine that replaces the usual DJ mix-table.
In the gallery space these suspended quilts attract and interact with viewers. Rather than providing them with the quotidian purpose of blanketing, here the warmth projected is the fleeting comfort of the clubbing. As a retreat from everyday issues, partying and celebration, may seem trivial, but such moments of escape can be critical for survival. This installation evokes the dazzling, communalexperience of clubbing creates a temporary utopia before we are forced to face reality once again, this time alone.
