Quilted Emptiness is an installation of thirty-five round quilts hanging from the ceiling by clothespins, alongside a video. The projection depicts the artist alone in an empty club, drinking and dancing to loud music, all the while fabricating disco-ball-like quilts at a sewing machine that replaces the usual DJ mix-table.
The quilts, rather than serving the quotidian purpose of blanketing, provide a fleeting comfort of clubbing. As a retreat from everyday concerns, partying may seem trivial, but such moments of escape can be critical for survival. This installation evokes the dazzling, communal experience that clubbing creates as a temporary utopia.
